Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at St. John’s Children’s Hospital is a special newborn nursery providing the highest level of care to babies in a 33-county area in south-central Illinois. Babies come to the NICU directly from St. John’s Birth Center or are transferred from outlying hospitals. Babies coming from other hospitals are transported either by ambulance or helicopter accompanied by members of St. John’s neonatal transport team. The transport team consists of specially trained nurses and respiratory therapists.
The NICU located in St. John’s Children’s Hospital has 40 beds for critically ill babies. There are two isolation nurseries for babies with certain types of infections. Babies who are admitted to the NICU are cared for by a team of highly skilled neonatologists, nurse practitioners, nurses, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, rehabilitation specialists, social workers, nutritionists and chaplains. There is a neonatologist available 24 hours a day. NICU nurses work closely with the neonatologists in providing care.
