The Orthopedic/Surgical Unit is a 44-bed specialty area for patients requiring rehabilitation of musculoskeletal functioning and prevention of further injury through restorative nursing care and a unit for general adult patients undergoing a variety of surgical procedures. The population on this unit is primarily adult patients including those with traumatic injury, total joint replacements, hip pinnings, back surgery and some medical orthopedic conditions along with gynecologic, urologic, abdominal, vascular, ENT and plastic surgery.
While the average length of stay is three to four days, many patients have a shorter length of stay, creating an ever-changing work environment. The nursing staff works together as a team and collaborates with physicians, rehab staff and other disciplines as partners in healthcare delivery to prepare patients and families for discharge and continuing care at home. St. John’s Hospital was recognized as one of the “100 Top Orthopedic Hospitals” identifying it as a benchmark in orthopedic clinical services and procedures.
