Physician Bios and Specialties

The Department of Pediatrics at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine is dedicated to caring for and treating the medical problems of infants, children and adolescents, providing the best care available close to home. In addition to generalist pediatricians, the faculty includes a variety of pediatric specialists and pediatric surgeons recruited as part of St. John’s Children’s Hospital, a joint endeavor of SIU and St. John’s Hospital in Springfield.

Dr. Hossam H. AbdelSalam (Pediatric Neurology)

Dr. AbdelSalam is an assistant professor of neurology and pediatrics at SIU School of Medicine. He joined the SIU faculty in 2006, specializing in pediatric neurology. Dr. AbdelSalam completed a three-year fellowship in child neurology at Cleveland Clinic Foundation (2006) and a pediatric residency at Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center in Brooklyn (2003). He was previously on the faculty of Cairo University Pediatric Hospital. Dr. AbdelSalam completed a pediatric residency and earned his medical degree from Cairo University (1998, 1993). His special practice interests are pediatric headache, epilepsy and brain white matter disorders. He is board certified in pediatrics.

Dr. Robert M. Abrams (Maternal-Fetal Medicine)

Dr. Abrams is an assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology at SIU School of Medicine. He joined the SIU faculty in 2007, specializing in maternal-fetal medicine. Dr. Abrams completed a three-year fellowship in maternal-fetal medicine at Loyola University Medical Center (2007) and his obstetrics and gynecology residency at the University of Illinois Chicago Medical Center (2002). Previously, he was in private practice in Chicago for two years. He earned his medical degree from Rush Medical College in Chicago (1997) and his bachelor’s from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (1993). His special practice interests are preeclampsia and prenatal ultrasound. Dr. Abrams is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology and eligible for certification in the subspecialty of maternal-fetal medicine.

Dr. Ingrid I. Alexander (Pediatric Allergy and Immunology)

Dr. Alexander is a community physician affiliated with the Asthma-Allergy Center in Springfield and also a clinical professor of pediatrics on the volunteer faculty for SIU School of Medicine. She completed a one-year fellowship in allergy and immunology at Children’s Memorial Hospital and Northwestern University Medical School (1995). She completed her residency in pediatrics and earned her medical degree at SIU (1983, 1979). She earned her master’s and bachelor’s degrees at Southern Illinois University Carbondale (1976, 1970). She is board certified in allergy and immunology and in pediatrics.
 
 
 
Dr. Samer Ammar (Pediatric Gastroenterology)

Dr. Ammar is an assistant professor of pediatrics at SIU School of Medicine, specializing in pediatric gastroenterology. He serves as director of nutrition support at St. John’s Children’s Hospital. Dr. Ammar joined the SIU faculty in 2006 after three years on the faculty at DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids. He completed a three-year fellowship in pediatric gastroenterology at Riley Hospital for Children (2002). He completed his pediatric residency at Louisiana State University Medical Center (1999) and received his medical degree from Damascus University School of Medicine (1991). Dr. Ammar’s special practice interests are eosinophilic esophagitis and inflammatory bowel disease. He is board certified in pediatrics and in the subspecialty of pediatric gastroenterology.
 
 
 
Glen Aylward, Ph.D. (Developmental/Behavioral Pediatrics)

Dr. Aylward is a professor of pediatrics and psychiatry at SIU School of Medicine, specializing in child psychology. He serves as chief of SIU’s developmental and behavioral pediatrics division and director of its Center for Disorders in Development and Learning. He also serves as director of the high risk infant follow-up services at St. John’s Children’s Hospital. Dr. Aylward joined the SlU faculty in 1979. He earned his doctorate from Georgia State University (1979), his master’s from Fairleigh Dickinson University (1974) and his bachelor’s from Rutgers University (1972). Dr. Aylward’s special interests are ADHD, learning disabilities, and developmental/neuropsychological disorders. He is board certified in clinical psychology and in clinical child and adolescent psychology.

Dr. Sangita Basnet (Pediatric Critical Care)

Dr. Basnet is an assistant professor of pediatrics at SIU School of Medicine. She also is on the medical staff of Capitol Community Health Center in Springfield. She joined SIU as a part-time faculty member in 2006. Dr. Basnet completed a three-year fellowship in pediatric critical care medicine at Washington University School of Medicine (2002). She completed her pediatric residency at Cook County Children’s Hospital (1999) and received her medical degree from Tribhuvan University, Institute of Medicine in Nepal (1992). Dr. Basnet’s special practice interest is pediatric critical care medicine. She is board certified in pediatrics and in the subspecialty of pediatric critical care medicine.
 
 
 
Dr. Andre Bieniarz (Maternal-Fetal Medicine)

Dr. Bieniarz is professor of obstetrics and gynecology and chief of the division of maternal-fetal medicine at SIU School of Medicine. He joined SIU faculty in 2006 after serving at J. H. Stroger Cook County Hospital, Harbor-University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) Medical Center and Michael Reese Hospital. Dr. Bieniarz completed a two-year fellowship in maternal-fetal medicine at Women’s Hospital at University of Southern California in Los Angeles (1982) and his obstetrics and gynecology residency at UCLA (1980). He earned his medical and bachelor’s degrees at the University of Illinois (1976, 1972). His research interests are prematurity, prenatal care, antepartum fetal assessment and ultrasound. Dr. Bieniarz is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology and in the subspecialty of maternal-fetal medicine.
 
 
 
Dr. Gregory P. Brandt (Pediatric Hematology/Oncology)

Dr. Brandt is an associate professor of pediatrics at SIU School of Medicine and director of SIU’s pediatric hematology/oncology division. He came to SIU in 1995 from the Children’s Hospital Medical Center in Cincinnati, where he completed a three-year fellowship in hematology/ oncology/bone marrow transplant (1995). He completed his pediatrics residency and earned his medical degree from St. Louis University School of Medicine (1991, 1988). He earned his bachelor’s from the College of St. Thomas (1983). Dr. Brandt’s special practice interests are pediatric leukemia and solid tumors, adolescents and young adults with cancer, congenital thrombotic disorders and hypercoagulable states as well as participation in clinical trials sponsored by the international Children’s Oncology Group. He is board certified in pediatrics and in the subspecialty of pediatric hematology/oncology.
 
 
 
Dr. Subhash C. Chaudhary (Pediatric Infectious Diseases)

Dr. Chaudhary is a professor of pediatrics at SIU School of Medicine and director of SIU’s pediatric infectious diseases division. He also serves as chair of the infection control committee at St. John’s Hospital. Dr. Chaudhary came to SIU in 1977 after completing a fellowship in pediatric infectious diseases and a pediatric residency at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. He earned his medical degree from All India Institute of Medical Sciences (1972) and his premedical degree from Hindu College (1966). Dr. Chaudhary’s special practice interests are pediatric infectious diseases, children with recurrent infections, fever of unknown origin, Kawasaki disease and infection control. He is board certified in pediatrics and in the subspecialty of pediatric infectious diseases.

Dr. Joseph D. Conlon (Pediatric Dermatology)

Dr. Conlon is a community physician at Springfield Clinic. He completed a fellowship in pediatric dermatology and residencies in pediatrics and dermatology at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin. He earned his medical degree from SIU School of Medicine (1999). His special practice interests include hemangiomas, birthmarks, acne, atopic dermatitis and cutaneous manifestations of systemic diseases. Dr. Conlon is board certified in pediatrics and dermatology.
 
 
 
Dr. Dennis T. Crouse, Ph.D. (Neonatology)

Dr. Crouse is a professor of pediatrics at SIU School of Medicine. He came to SIU in 1999 after six years on the faculty at the University of Tennessee. He completed a doctorate in experimental pathology and a three-year fellowship in neonatology, both from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (1992, 1988). Dr. Crouse completed his pediatrics residency and earned his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston (1985, 1982). He earned his bachelor’s from the University of Houston (1978). Dr. Crouse’s special practice interests are cytokines/host response, neonatal and maternal infections and pulmonary defense mechanisms. He is board certified in pediatrics and in the subspecialty of neonatal-perinatal medicine.
 
 
 
Dr. David H. Decker (Child/Adolescent Psychiatry)

Dr. Decker is an assistant professor of psychiatry at SIU School of Medicine and chief of SIU’s division of child psychiatry. He joined the SIU faculty in 1989. He completed a fellowship in child psychiatry at the William S. Hall Neuropsychiatric Institute (1988). Dr. Decker completed his psychiatry residency and earned his medical degree at SIU (1986, 1982). He earned his bachelor’s at Illinois Wesleyan University (1979). Dr. Decker’s special practice interests are depressive disorders, attention deficit hyperactivity disorders and obsessive-compulsive disorder. He is board certified in psychiatry and in child and adolescent psychiatry.
 
 
 
Dr. Konstantin Denev(Pediatric Critical Care)

Dr. Denev is an assistant professor of pediatrics at SIU School of Medicine. He joined the SIU faculty in 2005. Dr. Denev completed a one-year fellowship in critical care at the University of Miami (2005) and a two-year fellowship in critical care at Advocate Christ Hospital, while working as a research fellow at Chicago Medical School/Finch University (2003). He completed his pediatric residency at Mt. Sinai School of Medicine (2002). He earned his medical degree from the University of Medicine in Varna, Bulgaria (1996). Dr. Denev’s special practice interest is pediatric critical care. He is board certified in pediatrics.

Dr. Mary I. Dobbins (Child/Adolescent Psychiatry)

Dr. Dobbins is an assistant professor of psychiatry and pediatrics at SIU School of Medicine. She completed a psychiatry residency at SIU (2006) and a three-year fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry at the University of Iowa College of Medicine (2004), where she also was a visiting faculty member in pediatrics. Previously, Dr. Dobbins was on SIU’s faculty for five years (1993-98). She completed a pediatrics residency at the University of Missouri (1987) and earned her medical degree from SIU (1984). She specializes in child psychiatry, telepsychiatry, outpatient psychiatry consultations and lactation management. Dr. Dobbins is board certified in pediatrics and eligible for certification in child and adolescent psychiatry.

Dr. Jason A. French (Pediatric Hospitalist)

Dr. French is an assistant professor of pediatrics at SIU School of Medicine. He joined the SIU faculty in 2007. Dr. French completed his pediatrics residency and earned his medical degree at SIU (2007, 2004). He earned his bachelor’s from Cornell College (1999). His special practice interests are hospital medicine and child advocacy. He is board eligible for certification in pediatrics.
 
 
 
Dr. Magali Jean-Louis (Neonatology)

Dr. Jean-Louis is an assistant professor at SIU School of Medicine. She joined the SIU faculty in 2006, after serving on the staffs of the Illinois Masonic Medical Center and the Jersey Shore University Medical Center. She completed neonatology fellowship training at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School (2003). Dr. Jean-Louis completed her pediatric residency at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons (2000) and received her medical degree from Faculté de Médecine et de Pharmacie de L’Université d’Etat d’Haïti (1992). Dr. Jean-Louis’ special practice interest is neonatology. She is board certified in pediatrics and in the subspecialty of neonatal-perinatal medicine.
 
 
 
Dr. Mark R. Johnson (Pediatric Pulmonology)

Dr. Johnson is an assistant professor of pediatrics at SIU School of Medicine, specializing in pediatric pulmonary medicine. He came to SIU in 2004 after three years in private practice in Illinois and serving as an in-house physician at Barnes-Jewish St. Peter’s Hospital and at three Illinois hospitals for Glennon Care Pediatrics. Dr. Johnson completed a three-year fellowship in pulmonary medicine at St. Louis Children’s Hospital (2003) and his pediatric residency at the University of Texas Health Science Center (1996). He earned his medical degree from St. Louis University (1993). Dr. Johnson’s special practice interests are asthma, allergy, cystic fibrosis, exercise-induced respiratory problems and restrictive lung disease. He is board certified in pediatrics.
 
 
 
Dr. Jane C. Joost(Developmental/Behavioral Pediatrics)

Dr. Joost is an assistant professor of pediatrics at SIU School of Medicine. She joined the SIU faculty in 1991. Dr. Joost completed a fellowship in developmental and behavioral pediatrics at the University of Maryland (1991). She completed her residency in pediatrics and earned her medical degree from the Medical College of Ohio (1988, 1985). She earned her bachelor’s degrees from Ohio Dominican College (1975). Dr. Joost’s special practice interests are medical diagnostics and educational/behavioral consultation for children with significant developmental disabilities including autistic spectrum disorders, genetic disorders, mental retardation, Tourette syndrome and executive function disorder. She is board certified in pediatrics and in the subspecialty of developmental/behavioral pediatrics.
 
 
 
Dr. Levent Kahraman (Neonatology)

Dr. Kahraman is an assistant professor of neonatology at SIU School of Medicine. He joined the SIU faculty in 2007, specializing in neonatology. Most recently, he was an instructor in pediatrics/newborn medicine at Washington University School of Medicine (WU) and previously was a staff neonatologist and head of newborn services at hospitals in Turkey. Dr. Kahraman completed a four-year fellowship in newborn medicine at Temple University and WU/St. Louis Children’s Hospital (2001) and his pediatric residency at Children’s Medical Center of Brooklyn (1997). He earned his medical degree from Hacettepe University in Ankara, Turkey (1992). Dr. Kahraman is board certified in pediatrics and in the subspecialty of neonatal-perinatal medicine.
 
 
 
Dr. Narinder N. Khanna (Neonatology)

Dr. Khanna is a professor of pediatrics at SIU School of Medicine. He joined SIU’s full-time faculty in 2003, after 23 years on its volunteer faculty. He previously was director of newborn services and a neonatologist at St. John’s Hospital. Dr. Khanna completed a neonatology fellowship at Montreal Children’s Hospital (1970) and a pediatric residency at Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh (1968). He earned his medical degree from All India Institute of Medical Sciences (1963). Dr. Khanna’s special practice interests are evaluation and treatment of premature and seriously ill newborns. He is board certified in pediatrics and in the subspecialty of neonatal-perinatal medicine.
 
 
 
Dr. Randy A. Kienstra (Pediatric Nephrology)

Dr. Kienstra is a professor of pediatrics at SIU School of Medicine. He joined the SlU faculty in 1986 after 11 years as a community physician, was named chair of SIU’s Department of Pediatrics in 1988 and returned to its full-time faculty in 2005. Dr. Kienstra completed a two-year fellowship in pediatric nephrology at St. Louis Children’s Hospital (1974) and his pediatric residency at Cardinal Glennon Memorial Hospital (1972). He earned his medical degree from the St. Louis University School of Medicine (1968) and his bachelor’s from the University of Notre Dame (1964). Dr. Kienstra’s special practice interests are kidney disease in children, hypertension and electrolyte abnormalities. He is board certified in pediatrics and in the subspecialty of pediatric nephrology.

Dr. Lehman is a community physician affiliated with the Asthma-Allergy Center in Springfield and also a clinical assistant professor on the volunteer faculty for SIU School of Medicine. Dr. Tracy K. Lower (Pediatric Hospitalist)

Dr. Tracy K. Lower joined the SIU faculty in 1991 and now is an associate professor and director of SIU’s Hospitalist Services as well as medical director of the Inpatient Unit at St. John's Children's Hospital. Lower completed her residency in pediatrics and her medical degree at SIU (1991, 1988). She earned her bachelor's degree at Illinois Wesleyan University (1984). Lower is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics and Alpha Omega Alpha honorary medical society.
 
 
 
Dr. Gurpreet S. Mander (Pediatric Critical Care)

Dr. Mander is an assistant professor of pediatrics at SIU School of Medicine and director of SIU’s pediatric critical care division. He also serves as director of the pediatric intensive care unit at St. John’s Children’s Hospital. He joined the SIU faculty in 2005. Dr. Mander completed a three-year fellowship in pediatric critical care at Hope Children’s Hospital (2005) and worked as a pediatric hospitalist at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin and Central DuPage Hospital (2002-05). He completed his pediatric residency at University of Illinois Hospitals (1994). He earned his medical degree from Maulana Azad Medical College at Delhi University (1988). Dr. Mander’s special practice interest is pediatric critical care. He is board certified in pediatrics.

Dr. Richard L. Meisel (Maternal-Fetal Medicine)

Dr. Meisel is an associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology at SIU School of Medicine. He joined the SIU faculty in 2007 as a part-time faculty member, specializing in maternal-fetal medicine. He has worked as an attending physician at medical centers and hospitals in Kansas and Indiana and was director of maternal-fetal medicine at University of Kansas (UK) School of Medicine-Witchita for six years. Dr. Meisel completed a two-year fellowship in maternal-fetal medicine at Mount Sinai Medical Center (1990) and his obstetrics and gynecology residency at UK (1988). He earned his medical and bachelor’s degrees at the UK (1983, 1975). Dr. Meisel is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology and eligible for certification in the subspecialty of maternal-fetal medicine.
 
 
 
Dr. Victoria Nichols-Johnson (Pediatric Obstetrics/Sexual abuse)

Dr. Nichols-Johnson is an associate professor of general obstetrics and gynecology at SIU School of Medicine. She joined the SlU faculty in 1976. Dr. Nichols-Johnson completed her obstetrics and gynecology residency at Mayo Graduate School of Medicine (1975), where she served one year as chief resident. She earned her medical degree from the University of Michigan School of Medicine (1970) and her bachelor’s at the University of Illinois (1966). Dr. Nichols-Johnson’s special practice interests are lactation management, obstetrics, medical examination for sexual abuse and adolescent gynecology diagnosis and treatment. She is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology.

Dr. Ramzi Nicolas (Pediatric Cardiology)

Dr. Nicolas is an assistant professor of pediatrics at SIU School of Medicine and director of its pediatric cardiology division. He also serves as director of echocardiology at St. John’s Children’s Hospital. He joined the SIU faculty in 2005. Dr. Nicolas completed a one-year interventional cardiology fellowship and a three-year pediatric cardiology fellowship at St. Louis Children’s Hospital/Washington University (2005, 2004). He completed his pediatric residency at the State University of New York Health Science Center (2001). He earned his medical and bachelor’s degrees from the American University of Beirut (1998, 1994). Dr. Nicolas’ special practice interests are tissue doppler imaging technique to noninvasively diagnose heart dysfunction in pediatric patients with congenital heart disease and short- and medium-term outcome in pediatric heart transplant recipients. He is board certified in pediatrics and in the subspecialty of pediatric cardiology.
 
 
 
Dr. Daniel J. Niebrugge (Pediatric Hematology/Oncology)

Dr. Niebrugge is an assistant professor of pediatrics at SIU School of Medicine. He joined SIU in 2004 after working in private practice and on staff at Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital in Tacoma, Wash. Dr. Niebrugge completed a two-year fellowship in pediatric hematology and oncology at Children’s Hospital and Health Center in Seattle (1982) and his pediatric residency at the University of Missouri Medical Center (1980). He earned his medical degree from SIU (1977) and bachelor’s from the University of Illinois (1973). Dr. Niebrugge’s special practice interests are children, adolescents and young adults with hematology/oncology issues including leukemia, brain tumors, Hodgkin’s disease, bleeding and clotting disorders and pediatric palliative care. He is board certified in pediatrics and pediatric hematology and oncology.
 
 
 
Dr. Dharmendra J. Nimavat (Neonatology)

Dr. Nimavat is an assistant professor of pediatrics at SIU School of Medicine. He came to SIU in 2005 from Stony Brook University Hospital, where he completed a three-year fellowship in neonatal and perinatal medicine (2005). Dr. Nimavat completed his pediatric residency at Brookdale University Medical Center in Brooklyn (2002). He completed postgraduate training in pediatrics at B. J. Medical College (BJMC) and earned his medical degree from BJMC Gujarat University (1996, 1992). Dr. Nimavat’s special practice interest is neonatology. He is board certified in pediatrics.

Dr. Tankut Onal (Pediatric Cardiology)

Dr. Onal is an assistant professor of pediatrics at SIU School of Medicine. He joined SIU’s faculty in 2007 after completing a three-year fellowship in pediatric cardiology at the University of Florida Health Sciences Center. Dr. Onal completed his pediatrics residency at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center (2004). He earned his medical degree from Marmara University School of Medicine in Istanbul (1997). Dr. Onal’s special practice interest is pulmonary hypertension and cardiac MRI. He is board eligible for certification in pediatrics.
 
 
 
Dr. David R. Peterson (Emergency Medicine)

Dr. Peterson joined the Emergency Department at St. John’s Hospital in 2002 and serves as liaison to SIU’s Department of Pediatrics. He completed his residency in internal medicine and pediatrics at SIU School of Medicine (2002) and received his medical degree from SIU (1998). His clinical interests include asthma care and measurement of clinical quality. He is board certified in pediatrics and internal medicine.
 
 
 
Dr. Michael R. Pranzatelli (Pediatric Neurology)

Dr. Pranzatelli is a professor of neurology and pediatrics at SIU School of Medicine and is chief of its child and adolescent neurology division and director of the National Pediatric Myoclonus Center. He came to SIU in 1999 after seven years on the faculty at George Washington University. He previously was a research fellow at Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles. Dr. Pranzatelli completed a residency in pediatric neurology at the University of Colorado (1982) and in pediatrics at Case Western Reserve University (1979). He earned his medical degree from Pennsylvania State University (1976) and bachelor’s from Duquesne University (1972). Dr. Pranzatelli’s special practice interests are childhood movement disorders, neuroimmunologic disorders, opsoclonus-myoclonus syndrome and central nervous system drug trials. He is board certified in pediatrics as well as in psychiatry and neurology, with special qualifications in pediatric neurology.
 
 
 
Dr. Mark S. Puczynski (Pediatric Hospitalist)

Dr. Puczynski is a professor of pediatrics at SIU School of Medicine and chair of SIU’s Department of Pediatrics. He also is medical director of St. John’s Children’s Hospital. He joined the SIU faculty in 2005, after serving as chair of the pediatric department at both the Medical College of Ohio and Mercy Children’s Hospital in Toledo. Dr. Puczynski completed a one-year ambulatory care and child development fellowship at Harvard University School of Medicine Boston Children’s Hospital (1979) and his pediatric residency at Loyola University (1978). He earned his medical degree from Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine (1975) and bachelor’s from the University of Illinois (1972). He is board certified in pediatrics.
 
 
 
Dr. Michael C. Schneider (Pediatric Genetics)

Dr. Schneider is an assistant professor of pediatrics at SIU School of Medicine, specializing in pediatric genetics. He came to SIU in 1999 after six years on the faculty of Harvard Medical School. Dr. Schneider completed his pediatric residency at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (1989) and earned his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine (1985). He earned his bachelor’s from Georgetown University (1981). Dr. Schneider’s special practice interests are the role of DNASE genes in autoimmune disease, elucidation of genes responsible for inherited conditions and molecular biology. He is board certified in medical genetics.
 
 
 
Dr. Michael P. Sherman (Neonatology)

Dr. Sherman is a professor of pediatrics at SIU School of Medicine, specializing in neonatology. He joined the SIU faculty in 2005 after twenty years of service in the University of California (UC) system including UC Davis (UCD), UC San Diego (UCSD) and UC Los Angeles. He now holds the title of professor emeritus at UC. Dr. Sherman completed one-year fellowships in neonatal-perinatal medicine at UCD (1976) and at UCSD (1972) and completed his pediatric residency at the University of Michigan (1971). He earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin (1969) and bachelor’s from California State Polytechnic University (1965). His practice interests include prematurity and its complications, neonatal infections, birth defects, multiple births, and the effect of drug abuse on a pregnancy and a newborn. He is board certified in pediatrics and in the subspecialty of neonatal-perinatal medicine.
 
 
 
Dr. Stephen M. Soltys (Child/Adolescent Psychiatry)

Dr. Soltys is a professor of psychiatry at SIU School of Medicine and chair of SIU’s Department of Psychiatry. He joined the SIU faculty in 2002 after 10 years on the faculty at the University of Missouri School of Medicine (UM) and five years at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. Dr. Soltys completed a two-year fellowship in child psychiatry at UM (1987). He completed his psychiatry residency and earned his medical degree at SIU (1984, 1980). He earned his master’s of public administration from UM (1995) and bachelor’s at the University of Illinois (1976). Dr. Soltys’ special practice interests are child psychiatric disorders and program development consultation. He is board certified in psychiatry and in child and adolescent psychiatry.
 
 
 
Dr. Theodore R. Sunder (Pediatric Neurology)

Dr. Sunder is a professor of pediatrics at SIU School of Medicine, specializing in neurology and psychiatry. He came to SIU in 1995 after nine years on the faculty of East Carolina University School of Medicine where he was chief of child neurology. Dr. Sunder completed a two-year fellowship in pediatric neurology as well as a residency in neurology at Duke University Medical Center (1977, 1975) and a pediatric residency at the Children’s Hospital National Medical Center in Washington, D.C. (1974). He earned his medical degree from Thomas Jefferson University Medical College (1972) and bachelor’s from Washington and Jefferson College (1968). Dr. Sunder’s special practice interests are epilepsy in developmental disabilities and intellectual and developmental disabilities. He is board certified in pediatrics and neurology, with special qualifications in child neurology.

Dr. John P. Sutyak (Trauma Medicine)

Dr. Sutyak is an associate professor of general surgery at SIU School of Medicine and serves as medical director for the Southern Illinois Trauma Center (SITC) in Springfield. [A Level I trauma center, SITC is a partnership of Memorial Medical Center, St. John’s Hospital and SIU School of Medicine, serving west central and southern Illinois.] He joined the SIU faculty in 2001. Dr. Sutyak completed a fellowship in immunology at Harvard Medical School at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston (1988) and his general surgery residency at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center (1990). He earned a combined bachelor’s and medical degree at Pennsylvania State University (1981) and Jefferson Medical College (1983). Dr. Sutyak’s special practice interests are trauma/surgical critical care, bariatric surgery and medical education. He is board certified in general surgery and in surgical critical care.

Dr. Ayame Takahashi (Child/Adolescent Psychiatry)

Dr. Takahashi is an assistant professor of psychiatry at SIU School of Medicine and director of its child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship program. She joined the SIU faculty in 2006. She completed her child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship at the New York Presbyterian Hospital-Weill Cornel Medical Center (1998) and later was training director for the child and adolescent training program. Dr. Takahashi completed her psychiatry residency at Northwestern Memorial Hospital-McGaw Medical Center (1996). She earned her medical degree at the University of Kansas School of Medicine (1992) and her bachelor’s at Cornell University (1984). Dr. Takahashi’s special practice interests are anxiety and mood disorders, and psychoanalysis. She is board certified in psychiatry and in child and adolescent psychiatry.

Dr. K Anjali Singh (Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery)

Dr. Singh is an assistant professor of pediatric orthopaedic surgery at SIU School of Medicine. Prior to joining SIU in 2006, she was on the faculty for three years at the University of Rochester Medical Center. Dr. Singh completed a fellowship in pediatric orthopaedic surgery at Baylor College of Medicine (2002) and her orthopaedic surgery residency at Louisiana State University (LSU) Medical Center (2001). She earned both her medical and bachelor’s degrees from LSU (1996, 1992). Dr. Singh’s special practice interests are pediatric orthopaedic trauma and osteogenesis imperfection. She is board certified in orthopaedic surgery.
 
 
 
Dr. Reuben Bueno, Jr. (Pediatric Plastic Surgery)

Dr. Bueno is an assistant professor of plastic surgery at SIU School of Medicine. He joined the SIU faculty in 2006. He completed two one-year fellowships — in pediatric plastic surgery at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto (2005) and in hand and upper extremity surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City (2004). Dr. Bueno completed his residency in plastic surgery at SIU (2003). He earned his medical degree from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine (1997) and his bachelor’s from Yale University (1990). Dr. Bueno’s special practice interests include reconstructive plastic surgery, cleft lip and palate surgery, pediatric hand trauma, congenital hand anomalies, brachial plexus reconstruction and facial re-animation surgery. He is board certified in plastic surgery.
 
 
 
Dr. Keith R. Gabriel (Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery)

Dr. Gabriel is an associate professor of pediatric orthopaedic surgery at SIU School of Medicine. He joined SIU’s faculty in 2002 after three years on the faculty at the University of Minnesota and the staff at Shriners Hospital for Children in Minneapolis. Dr. Gabriel completed a one-year fellowship in pediatric orthopaedics at Children’s Hospital Medical Center in Cincinnati (1987) and his orthopaedic surgery residency at the Naval Hospital in Oakland (1984). He earned his medical degree from Rush Medical School (1977) and bachelor’s from the University of Illinois (1974). Dr. Gabriel’s special practice interests are scoliosis and pediatric spinal deformity. He is board certified in orthopaedic surgery.
 
 
 
Dr. Ruth D. Mayforth, Ph.D. (Pediatric Surgery)

Dr. Mayforth is an assistant professor of surgery at SIU School of Medicine. She came to SIU in 2001. Dr. Mayforth completed a two-year fellowship in pediatric surgery at St. Louis Children’s Hospital/ Washington University School of Medicine (2001) and a general surgery residency at Barnes-Jewish Hospital/Washington University (1999). She earned her medical degree and doctorate from the University of Chicago (1994, 1991) and her bachelor’s from Wheaton College (1985). Dr. Mayforth specializes in pediatric general surgery, including neck, thoracic, abdominal, soft tissue, oncologic and neonatal surgery. She is board certified in general surgery.
 
 
 
Dr. Patrick H. McKenna (Pediatric Urology)

Dr. McKenna is a professor of surgery at SIU School of Medicine and chair of its urology division. He came to SIU in 2001 after six years on the faculty at the University of Connecticut and directing the urodynamics program at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center. Dr. McKenna completed a two-year fellowship in pediatric urology at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto (1991) and his urology residency at the Naval Regional Medical Center in Portsmouth, Va. (1987). He earned medical and bachelor’s degrees from George Washington University (1982, 1978). Dr. McKenna’s special practice interests are pediatric urologic problems, antenatally detected urologic problems (urologic conditions identified in the fetus before birth), hypospadias surgery and other complex pediatric reconstructive problems, minimally invasive diagnostic and treatment techniques for children with vesicoureteral reflux, recurrent urinary tract infections, incontinence, undescended testes and hydrocele. He is board certified in urology.
 
 
 
Dr. David A. Rogers (Pediatric Surgery)

Dr. Rogers is a professor of surgery and pediatrics at SIU School of Medicine and specializes in pediatric general surgery. He came to SIU in 2000 after six years on the faculty at the Medical College of Georgia (MCG). He completed a two-year pediatric surgery residency at the University of Tennessee (1994) and a one-year pediatric surgical oncology fellowship at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (1992). Dr. Rogers completed his surgery residency at MCG (1990) and earned his medical and bachelor’s degrees from the University of South Florida (1984, 1980). Dr. Rogers’ special practice interests include the full range of pediatric surgical conditions including hernias and gastrointestinal diseases as well as congenital anomalies. He is board certified in surgery, with special qualifications in pediatric surgery.
 
 
 
Dr. Gayle E. Woodson (Otolaryngology)

Dr. Woodson is a professor of otolaryngology at SIU School of Medicine and chair of its otolaryngology - head and neck surgery division. She joined SIU’s faculty in 2003. Dr. Woodson completed a fellowship in laryngology at the Institute of Laryngology & Otology in London (1982). She completed her otolaryngology residency at Baylor University College of Medicine (1981) and her general surgery residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital (1978). She earned her medical degree from Baylor (1975) and her bachelor’s from Rice University (1972). Dr. Woodson’s special practice interests are laryngology (voice, swallowing and airway disorders) and pediatric otolaryngology. She is board certified in otolaryngology.
