Pediatric Intensive Care Unit
The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) in St. John's Children's Hospital is located on the 5th floor of the Carol Jo Vecchie Women and Children's Center. This eight-bed unit provides care for critically ill pediatric patients under age 18.

A physician with specialized training in pediatric intensive care medicine, called a pediatric intensivist, supervises the care of the nearly 200 children admitted to the unit every year. A team of pediatric specialists is available to provide care in the areas of hematology-oncology, cardiology, behavioral pediatrics, gastroenterology, genetics, infectious diseases, neonatology, nephrology, neurology, pulmonology, rehabilitation, and various pediatric surgical areas.

The PICU nurses are highly skilled and specially trained to work in this critical care environment.
Since admission to an intensive care unit can be frightening and stressful for patients and their families, our child life specialist provides coping strategies. The child life specialist also assists with the transition from the PICU to the Pediatric Unit.
