“This project is about embracing women of all backgrounds during their breast cancer journey by wrapping them in shawls created out of loving concern,” says Dr. Maryam Mostoufi of the Greater Springfield Interfaith Association.
Mostoufi is leading the innovative new project called La Cunã, named for the Latin word meaning cocoon. Launched in October 2006, the goal of La Cunã is to enlist the support of those who enjoy knitting, crocheting or sewing to create 1,000 shawls to give to patients being treated for breast cancer. “Women undergoing chemotherapy and radiation therapy for breast cancer often experience chills, and the warm shawls are a way to help keep them comfortable,” explains Mostoufi.
Currently, some 70 volunteers have signed on to create shawls. Those who don’t have the time or know-how to make the shawls may get involved by donating yarn. Drop-off locations include Jeffrey Alans on Wabash in Springfield, the main lobby of St. John’s Hospital and the lobby of the Carol Jo Vecchie Women and Children’s Center, the American Cancer Society of Knit Wits in Springfield.. Financial contributions also are being accepted by Friends of St. John's Hospital.
Other partners in La Cunã are the Illinois Department of Human Services, the Department of Public Health and the Springfield Ministerial Alliance.
