Women have always had a unique understanding of the types of cancer than occur in the reproductive system, including breast, cervical, endometrial (uterine) and ovarian cancers.
In the past few years, the number of cases of lung, leukemia, lymphoma and colon cancer in women have increased. This increase means women need to be more aware than ever of the need to adopt healthy behaviors.
Prevention
Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is very important. This includes things such as eating a healthy diet, exercising and avoiding known cancer-causing agents like tobacco products and overexposure to the sun.
According to the American Cancer Society, nearly one third of all cancer deaths are caused by preventable factors such as tobacco use, prolonged sun exposure and alcohol use.
Early detection
Early detection has a great impact on the course of treatment. Follow the American Cancer Society Screening Guidelines and have regular checkups with your primary care provider.
If you are unable to afford a pap smear or mammogram, contact the Illinois Breast and Cervical Cancer Program at 1-888-522-1282. You may qualify for free screenings.
Treatment
There are many new treatment options available at St. John’s Cancer Institute, as well as supportive treatments to manage the side effects of chemotherapy and radiation therapy.
A cancer diagnosis begins a journey. At St. John’s Cancer Institute, we offer a variety of services that can assist you on that journey. We also participate in Relay for Life and hold an annual Cancer Survivor’s Picnic for all cancer survivors.
