Pediatric Balance Trainer
The pediatric balance trainer is a piece of equipment that helps children ages 1-18 achieve independence. By offering unassisted but guarded activities, the balance trainer gives children with walking and muscle strength problems the chance to be in charge. The trainer provides exercises in sitting, four-point, kneeling, standing, squatting, and during transitions to and from standing. Each set of reproducible exercises has a common theme, and allows those kids that couldn’t otherwise sit up or balance themselves a sense of great accomplishment.
NICU Breast Pumps
Breast pumps are a way for moms who can’t give their baby breast milk either because they aren’t physically or geographically able to do so naturally. Breast milk is better than infant formula and should be given whenever possible because it provides just the right amount of sugars, fats, proteins, and vitamins. By offering the breast pumps within the NICU, new moms can give their babies the nutriment they deserve even while in the hospital environment.
Last Chemo Celebrations
These are the most important parties that a pedi cancer patient can have! To celebrate the last treatment, balloons, confetti, party hats, streamers, and even a last treatment cake are always in order! There is nothing more special than saying goodbye and good luck to a healthy cancer survivor!
Meditation Garden Supplies
After renovation, the new Meditation Garden will offer families on the pediatric floor a chance to get a breath of fresh air while staying within the hospital! The Garden will be complete with a pond, trees and flowers, and periscope to look out across Springfield. Every child needs to be able to be outside, even if they are sick or injured.
Humor Cart and Expressive Arts Supplies
Everyone needs to have a sense of humor when in the hospital, and kids can express themselves by painting, coloring, drawing, or creating! Expressive Arts volunteers make monthly visits to encourage kids to use their imagination as a therapeutic way of dealing with hospital stays.
Pedi Massage Therapy Program
Pediatric massage has been shown to be instrumental in managing psychological stress, developing emotionally, and feeling relaxed while kids are in the hospital. A certified massage therapist visits St. John’s Children’s Hospital in order to provide children with a sense of well-being and calmness in a time of uncertainty and duress.
Pedi Music Therapy Program
Music therapy has proven to be an excellent outlook for children to channel their energy while admitted in the hospital. A certified music therapist makes monthly visits and helps kids use music as a way to express feelings, concern, and hope while fostering an appreciation of their own talent.
Pediatric Rehab Evaluations/Consults
Before a patient comes in for pediatric treatment, s/he undergoes a thorough evaluation to see exactly which types of therapy are necessary: occupational, speech pathology, or physical. Each individual child is given a complete exam and consultation paid for by Children’s Miracle Network.
While some of these items are diagnosis-specific, many are used to treat children across the board who present as both inpatients and outpatients, critical and routine, at St. John’s Children’s Hospital.
