About the School

St. John's Hospital School of Clinical Laboratory Science, founded in 1915, is accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences , 8410 West Bryn Mawr Ave., Suite 670, Chicago, IL 60631; telephone: 773-714-8880; www.naacls.org.

The 47-week program is recognized by eleven college/university academic affiliates as fulfilling the senior year baccalaureate degree requirements. The program curriculum consists of didactic and clinical components. The didactic segment includes lectures in the various disciplines of clinical laboratory science. The clinical component consists of a formal hands-on rotational schedule into each section of the laboratory for a specified number of weeks. Students must be able to attend school on a full-time basis (Monday-Friday). The program, which begins each year in June, has a maximum student capacity of six.

Upon successful completion of the program, the student is awarded a certificate from St. John's Hospital School of Clinical Laboratory Science as a graduate clinical laboratory scientist and a baccalaureate degree from the affiliated college/university, if applicable. Graduates are eligible to take the national certification examinations given by the National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel for certification as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist, C.L.S.(NCA) and by the Board of Registry of the American Society for Clinical Pathology for certification as a Medical Technologist, M. T.(ASCP). Granting of the certificate or degree is not contingent upon passing a certification examination.
