Admission Requirements

Applicants are considered eligible for admission into the program if they meet the minimum admission requirements for any one of the three categories. 

All GPA requirements are based on a 4.0 scale.

Category 1
High School Graduate

A. High school cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.5 or rank in upper 40 percent of graduating class. If you do not meet this requirement, see Category 3.
B. Complete MAT 092 with a grade of C or better, or demonstrate MAT 092 on placement test.
C. English - equivalent to COM 099 on placement test.
D. Reading skills - level at which no remediation is required.
E. Adequate physical and emotional health to carry out required tests of a respiratory therapist.
F. Completion of HLT 205 Human Anatomy and Physiology or equivalent with a minimum grade of “C” recommended.  (Completion of at least 1 year of high school biology or 1 semester of college biology within the past 5 years is a prerequisite for HLT 205.)

Category 2
GED Certificate Application

A. GED composite score of at least 225 (2250) with no individual score below 45 (450).  If you do not meet this requirement, see Category 3 below.
B. Complete MAT 092 with a grade of C or better, or demonstrate MAT 092 on placement test.
C. English - equivalent to COM 099 on placement test.
D. Reading skills - level at which no remediation is required.
E.Adequate physical and emotional health to carry out required tests of a respiratory therapist.
F. Completion of HLT 205 Human Anatomy and Physiology with a minimum grade of “C” recommended. (Completion of at least 1 year of high school biology or 1 semester of college biology within the past 5 years is a prerequisite for HLT 205.)

Category 3
Applicants who do not qualify in Categories 1 & 2

A. Complete at least 9 credit hours of college in a single semester with a minimum GPA of 2.5 with no grade below a C.
B. Course numbers for the 9 credit hours must be at least 100 level.  Developmental or remedial courses will not be considered.
C. Completion of HLT 205 Human Anatomy and Physiology or equivalent with a minimum grade of  “C” recommended.

Physical Requirements

  • Applicant possesses bilateral hand and arm dexterity to perform such procedures as chest physical therapy (CPT), moving equipment, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and suctioning.
  • Applicant is able to stand and walk for long periods of time to perform various therapies (e.g., CPT, and general floor therapy, critical care, etc.) and move quickly to reach the location of any emergency.
  • Applicant is able to stoop, stand and lift for equipment and patient handling.
  • Applicant’s hearing is adequate for communication with patients and other personnel, chest auscultation and monitoring alarms.
  • Applicant’s vision is adequate for visual observation of patient, performing necessary paperwork, viewing computer data, reading medical records and medication labels, and utilizing and monitoring equipment.
  • Applicant is able to communicate effectively with patients and healthcare providers.
  • Applicant is able to work with potential exposure to hazard (e.g. tuberculosis, other infectious diseases, and blood borne pathogens).
