Kidzeum, St. John's Children's Hospital join forces

SPRINGFIELD – As part of its continuing quest to build relationships with the business and civic community, Kidzeum of Health and Science (KHS) is pleased to announce a partnership with St. John’s Children’s Hospital.

The hospital is committing $1.25 million to help establish a children’s museum in Springfield proving it’s not just a sponsor but a true collaborator.

“We are honored and very grateful to have the support of St. John’s Children’s Hospital,” said Rachael Thomson, KHS board president. “We appreciate the hospital’s long-term commitment to the community in establishing a children’s museum that will be a vibrant family attraction for the capital city.”

Hospital officials recognize the value associated with a project that will offer a unique learning experience for the children of central Illinois.

“This is an exciting opportunity for those of us who are passionate about improving the health of our children. It’s one thing for adults to tell kids to eat right and exercise. What Kidzeum will do is show kids why healthy behavior is important and in a really fun, exciting and interactive way.” said Dr. Mark Puczynski, Chair, Department of Pediatrics, SIU School of Medicine and medical director at St. John’s Children’s Hospital.

“Kidzeum will be an extension of the classroom offering children an interactive approach to learning,” said Thomson. “Through our hands-on exhibits and programs visitors will learn about the interworking of the body, the value of renewable energy resources, and how our community plays an important role in our health and well-being. We’re hopeful that businesses, families, foundations and individuals throughout central Illinois follow the precedent set by St. John’s and come forward in support of this unique project.”

In 2007 KHS and its 16-member volunteer board began exploring the possibility of reviving a children’s museum. After thorough study, it was determined that Springfield is ready to again welcome such an attraction. As part of the effort, the Springfield Park District offered the land and infrastructure at the future site of the Edwin Watts Southwind Park, just south of Springfield.

“We are thankful for the commitment from the park district and believe the location is ideal,” said Thomson. “We have room to grow and being located off Interstate-55 certainly offers easy access. It’s also important that we partner with Butch Elzea and his efforts to create an environment at Southwind that is accessible to the disabled.”

KHS is in the process of finalizing design and exhibit plans. Specific project details will be unveiled in the coming months.
