Why is fellowship training important?
![]() |
Fellowship training is important because as the surgical specialty expands, it is becoming increasingly difficult to master everything in the five-year training period. The benefits of additional training, called fellowships, in a surgeon's area of interest are reflected in improved patient outcomes. Residents know better training will make them better surgeons. This is reflected in the large number of residents pursuing fellowships. Sajida Ahad, MD, medical director of the Center for Metabolic and Weight Loss Surgery, is fellowship-trained in bariatric and laparoscopic surgery and surgical education. She completed her residency at Mayo Clinic. She underwent her fellowship training at the University of Washington.
