Center for Diabetes & Metabolic Health
St. John’s Hospital has teamed up with Southern Illinois University (SIU) School of Medicine to open the Center for Diabetes and Metabolic Health. Center Director Michael Jakoby, MD, MA specializes in the treatment of Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, pre-diabetes, cholesterol and related disorders, Metabolic Syndrome and obesity. Dr. Jakoby sees patients on the 5th Floor of the Prairie Heart Institute.
Services
Dr. Jakoby uses a team approach to provide patients with a treatment plan best suited to their needs. He works in collaboration with health care professionals at St. John’s Regional Wound Care Center and Center for Metabolic and Weight Loss Surgery, as well as Prairie Heart Institute and the Illinois Retina Center.
The Center features an on-site laboratory, continuous glucose monitoring and glucometer downloads, as well as insulin pump management. It accepts most insurance plans.
Diabetes and Nutrition Education
The Center’s nurse educator Caren Bryant, RN, BSN, is certified in diabetes education and dietitian Sara Lopinski, RD, has more than 35 years experience. These individuals can meet with you individually or in a group setting.
Each quarter the certified nurse educator and dietitian will present a four-part diabetes education series. Topics are: 1. On the Road to Better Managing Your Diabetes; 2. Diabetes and Healthy Eating; 3. Monitoring Your Blood Glucose; and 4. Continuing Your Journey with Diabetes.
