Skill Building
Positive social skills prepare your children for success at home, at school and for life.
Children learn behaviors – both good and bad. If you do not teach your child positive social skills, society might teach negative ones. Parents can follow the skills listed below to teach their child step-by-step skills to:
- Use Self Control
- Deal with group Pressure, or
- Ask for Help.
These are examples of over 50 skills you can teach your children once you know the rehearsal steps. You teach by doing the skill, practicing it, and correcting mistakes with positive feedback. To get more skills, you can buy the books listed below.
Parent Help Line uses Arnold P. Goldstein’s The Prepare Curriculum to teach skills to parents and children. This book is a valuable resource for our Parents as Mentors: Coaching for Success support group. We make easy-to-read skill sheets for each group meeting.
Other books by Ellen McGinnis and Arnold Goldstein on skill building that you can
buy include:
- Skillstreaming in Early Childhood: New Strategies and Perspective for Teaching
Prosocial Skills - Skillstreaming the Adolescent
- Skillstreaming the Elementary School Child
