Generations - Psychiatric care for older adults

Aging healthy includes both physical and mental health. Quality of life is important to longevity, and Living to 100, a web-based assessment, will help you determine those factors that will improve your life expectancy, and be more healthy.
During the normal aging process, older adults encounter stressors that trigger emotional responses. Two of the most stressful unplanned life events are a decline in health and loss of loved ones. Most older adults adapt to these changes and maintain their well-being by relying on their personal resources and their support systems.
However, 20 percent of those 55 and older experience mental disorders that are not a part of normal aging. The most common disorders are anxiety disorders, depression and cognitive impairment, such as Alzheimer’s disease.
St. John’s Hospital’s Generations program addresses the mental health needs of older adults and provides support to these individuals and their families.
The Generations Program at St. John’s Hospital features:
- A Medical Director who is board certified in geriatric psychiatry
- Nursing and counseling staff with specialized training in geriatric health needs
- Family support and education
- Groups and activities specially designed for geriatric patients
- Equipment to maximize independence and maintain personal dignity
- A comfortable, home-like environment
