Diagnostic Radiology

The Diagnostic Radiology group at St. John's performs over 75,000 procedures per year. Many of these procedures can be performed 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We provide service to the Emergency Department and to both inpatients and outpatients.

The most frequently ordered exam in Radiology is the chest X-ray. This exam can be done in the Radiology Department or, depending on the patient's condition, at the bedside. In addition, chest X- rays are performed at certain times of the day at remote locations, including the fifth floor of the Prairie Heart Institute and the outpatient area on Mason Street.

Other examinations include upper GI (stomach), BE or lower GI (colon), myelograms (contrast studies of the spinal canal), and arthrograms (contrast studies of the bony joint spaces).

Many, but not all, outpatient exams can be performed on a "walk-in" basis. Often an exam will require patient preparation prior to the exam, or an exam may require the presence of an "X-ray doctor," also known as a radiologist. For this reason it is always best to call the Radiology Department at 217-544-6464, ext. 44770 to find out if an appointment is needed.

If an exam needs to be scheduled, your physician or you may call St. John's Central Scheduling Department at 217-757-6565. All radiology exams require a written or phoned-in order from your physician.
