Stroke Treatment

St. John’s Hospital is committed to aggressively caring for, teaching and rehabilitating patients who have suffered a stroke. Because a stroke affects the lives of everyone involved, we strive to involve the family both during and after a “brain attack”.  St. John's Hospital, in collaboration with the American Stroke Association  (www.strokeassociation.org) (a division of the American Heart Association) is dedicated to educating the community about stroke awareness and prevention.

Within minutes of arriving at St. John's Hospital, a patient with signs or symptoms of stroke receives state of the art care, undergoing tests immediately to determine the cause of their symptoms.

St. John's Hospital offers:

  • Expert Emergency Department staff trained in managing and treating stroke. If stroke is confirmed, the patient is evaluated to see if they are a candidate for the only FDA-approved drug for acute stroke - t-PA.   t-PA (tissue plasminogen activator) is a  clot-busting drug that can significantly reduce long-term disability if given within the  first three hours after ischemic stroke occurs.  Stroke patients that have met the criteria to receive t-PA have been given it 100% of the time at St. John's Hospital.
  • A 64 slice CT scanner located within the Emergency Department that allows for rapid detection of stroke.
  • A dedicated Radiology Department that offers expert interpretation of magnetic resonance angiography (MRA), functional magnetic resonance imaging, MRI, computed tomography angiography (CTA), and CT scans; as well as an integrated, high speed, on-line radiology service that features a voice recognition dictation system.
  • Neurologists and neurosurgeons, experts in treating and managing stroke, are on call 24 hours/day.
  • Rehabilitation therapists-occupational, speech and physical therapists- that are dedicated to getting patients functioning to their fullest potential.
  • Physicians, nursing staff and other dedicated and valuable staff members provide a wide variety of services and expertise to help our patients recover to their fullest potential as quickly as possible.
If you have any of the warning signs of a stroke, Call 911 immediately or get to St. John's Hospital Emergency Department. Every second counts! Time lost is brain lost!

St. John’s Hospital-we're ready for the moment you need us.
