Springfield Area Mobile Intensive Care System, or SAMIC, was created at HSHS St. John's Hospital in 1976 following the inception of the Emergency Medical Services System in 1971, approving St. John’s as one of nine statewide Regional Trauma Centers. Dr. John M. Holland served as our first Project Medical Director.

Today, St. John’s EMS System encompasses 14 counties, with 68 transport and non-transport EMS services, along with five associate and participating hospitals providing emergency care throughout the region. These agencies represent nearly 1400 EMTs, Advanced EMTs and Paramedics.

Our EMS personnel are paid, volunteer, full-time, part-time, private, municipal, and fire protection district based providers. All are dedicated professionals representing their communities.
