Prairie Heart Institute and HSHS St. John's Hospital celebrated a milestone achievement in minimally invasive heart surgeries, an alternative to traditional open heart surgery. Dr. Raja Golpadas has performed 100 minimally invasive cardiac surgeries and St. John's is the only hospital in Illinois performing true minimally invasive cardiac surgery. 


The Illinois Rural Health Association presented its 2016 Rural Health Award of Merit to the Illinois Telehealth Network (ITN). HSHS St. John’s Hospital was one of the 23 network members honored with this award. This award is presented to a group that has made great strides to improve access to rural health care with innovative programs or activities

Doctors at the Prairie Heart Institute (PHI) at HSHS St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, Ill., were the first in the United States to successfully complete a double transcatheter heart valve replacement using the Edwards Sapien 3™ valve.

St. John’s received Springfield State Journal-Register’s Readers’ Choice Awards for Best Pediatric Hospital, Best Birthing Center and Best Trauma Center.

HSHS St. John’s was recognized by CareChex® Quality Rating System for an outstanding rating in 2016. St. John’s received a score that was greater than or equal to the 90th percentile. It was the highest rating of all hospitals in the surrounding area.

HSHS St. John’s Hospital is proud to have received its eighth consecutive A in patient safety from The Leapfrog Group, an independent industry watchdog. St. John’s has maintained an A grade from Leapfrog since 2012—only 136 hospitals out of the 2,571 that were scored have maintained eight straight As.

HSHS St. John’s Hospital received the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines®- Stroke Silver Plus Quality Achievement Award. The award recognizes the hospital’s commitment and success ensuring stroke patients receive the most appropriate treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines based on the latest scientific evidence.

HSHS St. John’s Hospital was awarded the 2016 “Greenhealth Partner for Change” Award and the Greening the OR Award by Practice Greenhealth, the nation’s leading health care community. This award is one of the organization’s Environmental Excellence Awards for the health care sector.



For the seventh consecutive ranking, St. John’s received an “A” in patient safety from The Leapfrog Group, an independent industry watchdog. St. John’s is the only hospital in Sangamon and the surrounding counties to receive this top rating awarded bi-annually.

HSHS St. John's Hospital was designated as a Blue Distinction Center+ for Cardiac Care by BlueCross BlueShield in November.

In October, The Illinois Department of Public Health certified HSHS St. John’s Hospital as a Level II Pediatric Trauma Center. HSHS St. John’s Regional Trauma Center is the only Level I Trauma Center in the region to achieve this certification.

Prairie Heart Institute at HSHS St. John's Hospital earned Gold Plus recognition from the American Heart Association's "Get With the Guidelines®" program for its care of heart failure and heart attack patients.

The Prairie Heart Institute at St. John’s received the first Accreditation for Cardiovascular Excellence (ACE) in Illinois for its cardiac catheterization lab.

Physicians at Prairie Heart were the first in the U.S. and the seventh in the world to successfully complete a procedure to implant a medical device, known as Lotus™ valve, in a patient with an existing artificial heart valve.

Prairie Heart Institute at St. John's Hospital earned the Platinum Performance Achievement Award from the American College of Cardiology for implementing a higher standard of care for heart attack patients in July.

In April, St. John's received the 2015 Women’s Choice Award® for America’s Best Hospitals for Cancer Care.
