Groundbreaking Research

Woman looking through microscopeAt Prairie Heart Institute, we believe world-class cardiac care begins with giving our patients access to the world’s best – and most promising – research. Partnering with a network of the world’s premier research partners gives each of our physician’s access to the latest clinical trials and other groundbreaking advances.

Taking a proactive approach to research gives our physicians – and their patients – a distinct advantage in the diagnosis and treatment of most cardiac conditions.

From pioneering revolutionary procedures like Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) to being among the first to use biodegradable stents, the work of our esteemed research team is impacting patients throughout central Illinois – and beyond.

New innovations

Here are some of the latest advances made possible by our award-winning research team:

WATCHMEN™ Procedure
Used to replace blood thinners for patients with atrial fibrillation.

New TAVR devices
Smaller, more easily delivered cardiac valves implanted without the need for open heart surgery.

Prairie Cardiovascular cardiologists at HSHS St. John’s Hospital were the first to enroll patients into Lutonix’s LEVANT 2 trial. LEVANT 2 is a global, randomized trial to evaluate the safety and efficacy of the Moxy™ Drug Coated Balloon compared to a standard angioplasty balloon for the treatment of peripheral arterial disease.

Randomized trial comparing carotid surgery to carotid stenting.

The use of cardiac derived cells in hopes to regenerate and improve cardiac function after a heart attack. In January 2015 trial successfully completed Phase I, which mainly evaluated safety.

Implantable device used to reshape the left ventricle thus improving heart function.

Updated ICD technology allowing patients to safely undergo MRI scan.

Exclusive partnership with PERC

Prairie Education and Research Cooperative (PERC) allows Prairie Heart specialists to tap into, and contribute to, one of the nation’s top cardiac care-related knowledge bases.

Research conducted in Springfield at PERC provides our patients access to latest treatments and technology that is only available in the most sophisticated cardiac centers. PERC is just one more way we’re reaching out today to create a brighter tomorrow for all of our patients.
