HSHS St. John’s Hospital Encourages Bike Safety This Memorial Day Weekend

Bicyclists face a higher rate of crash-related injuries and deaths than occupants of motor vehicles do, according to the Center for Disease Control (CDC).

This Memorial Day weekend, HSHS St. John’s Hospital is asking you to play it safe on all fronts, but especially if you’re taking bicycles out for a ride.

Bicycle helmets reduce the risks of head and brain injuries in the event of a crash. All bicyclists, no matter their age, should wear a properly fitted helmet every time they ride.

“I know how devastating head injuries can be. I won’t let my daughters get on their bicycles without a helmet,” said Dr. Gurpreet Mander, chief medical officer at St. John’s Hospital and pediatrician who spends most of his time in the intensive care unit.

St. John’s has been active in the community by providing fittings and helmets to children in the area. The community benefit and trauma teams recently handed out helmets at Scheels Safe Family Saturday and have two more events planned.

Parents interested in getting free bike helmets for their children can plan to attend one of these events:

  1. Enos Park, Saturday, June 10 from 1-3 p.m.
  2. Chatham Police Department, Wednesday, June 14 from 5-7 p.m.
