HSHS St. John’s Hospital Partners with Advanced ICU Care® to Offer Tele-ICU Services

HSHS St. John’s Hospital introduced its new tele-ICU partnership with Advanced ICU Care today. Tele-ICU uses technology that combines clinical management software with virtual care tools to enable remote intensivist-led teams to collaborate on the care of patients in St. John’s ICU units. Advanced ICU Care clinicians monitor certain vital signs and laboratory results around the clock. Electronic alerts notify the St. John’s team if a situation arises that requires attention. Two-way videoconferencing technology enables Advanced ICU Care clinicians to see and communicate directly with bedside clinicians, patients and families.

Advanced ICU Care centers are staffed by fellowship-trained intensivist physicians; critical care advanced practice providers (NPs or PAs); CCRN-certified critical care nurses and health care assistants. All providers are licensed in the state of Illinois and are credentialed and privileged at the hospital.

“Advanced ICU Care will provide an extra layer of support to enhance patient care and safety,” said Charles L. Lucore, MD, MBA, president and CEO of HSHS St. John’s Hospital. “These clinicians are a supplement to our bedside physicians and staff, not a replacement. Staffing ratios will not change.”

An “eAlert” button in each patient room activates the videoconferencing technology, according to Gurpreet Mander, MD, MBA, St. John’s chief medical officer. “It is readily apparent when the camera is activated, as it moves from a resting position away from the patient to an active viewing position. When the video session is complete it returns to its resting position. Audio and video sessions are not recorded.”

There is no extra cost to patients for this service. To learn more, go to st-johns.org/teleICU.
