HSHS St. John’s Hospital Provides Emergency Childbirth Training

The number of babies born before reaching the hospital has been on the rise locally. To help provide local firefighters, police officers and emergency services personnel with the skills needed for these out-of-hospital births, HSHS St. John’s Hospital is conducting free, two-hour training sessions on May 23 – 25 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.at Springfield Fire Department, Station E, located at 2730 Old Rochester Rd.

Chelsea Fehring, RN, BSN, TNS, is a member of St. John’s trauma outreach and education team. She says this training will address not only out-of-hospital births, but what to do when a pregnant woman is involved in a trauma, such as a car accident.

“Medical professionals from St. John’s trauma team, Saints Flight and OB/neonatal transport teams are providing the training,” Fehring said. “The hands-on training sessions will include a simulated live birth and how to deliver neonatal resuscitation.”

Emergency responders who are interested in attending this free training should call the Springfield Fire Department at 217-788-8430.
