Meet Wendy White-Mitter
My story starts with a stomach ache. A continuous, burning and hurting that was with me for more than 10 years. It was a pain that would increase or decrease slightly, but never go completely away. I learned that keeping carbohydrates in my stomach at all times would lessen the discomfort. My doctor and nurse practitioner worked very hard to control my overactive production of stomach acid with different combinations of medications. Nothing seemed to bring relief as much as eating some bread, pasta or potatoes.
As you can imagine, this high calorie, unhealthy diet led to a rapid weight gain and a multitude of other health problems. My blood pressure surged out of control. I started experiencing migraine headaches, unstable blood sugars and extreme lethargy and depression. Constant pain and a lack of energy are a bad combination for good emotional health. I felt like I was losing myself in this battle and didn’t even have the energy to fight back. My nurse practitioner agreed to refer me to Dr. Sajida Ahad who changed my life.
Dr Ahad began treatment with a scope to determine the extent of damage from the overproduction of stomach acid to my esophagus and stomach. Excess acid can lead to esophageal and stomach Cancer so we wanted to surgically treat my condition before any cancer was diagnosed.
My surgery ended up being postponed for more than a year due to insurance reasons. All the while, Dr Ahad and her staff continued to encourage me, and be a great support for me as I continued to gain weight and lose hope. After Dr Ahad finally convinced my insurance company to pay for my surgery she did a Roux-en-Y procedure in June 2010. When I awoke from the surgery, I no longer had heartburn for the first time in 10 years. I couldn’t believe it.
I lost over 30 pounds during the first month after my surgery. I continued to adjust to my new healthier eating habits, and the weight continued to fall off. I went from a size 22 to a size 4. I lost about 100 pounds and now feel better than I have in years. I no longer take medications for blood pressure or migraine headaches, and my vital signs are all perfect. After being single for 17 years, and raising my girls as a single mom, I also remarried. It was truly a fresh start to a new life!
I continue to see Dr. Ahad regularly to monitor my weight, my labs and my overall well-being. Dr Ahad and her staff continue to encourage me to take good care of my body as well as my whole self. I attend the monthly support group as often as I can, which really helps. This comprehensive approach to care is what I believe has contributed to my success and is what sets this program apart from others.
